6 Tips for Staying Healthy While Pregnant

Taking care of yourself and following a healthy lifestyle is very important when you’re going through a pregnancy. You have to know how to keep yourself healthy so you give birth to your baby without any problems. Check out these 6 tips that can help you be at your best while pregnant.

Extra Calories

When you are pregnant your body will require some extra calories because you are feeding for two people. An extra 300 calories each day is the average, but your doctor may ask you to intake fewer calories if you are considered overweight.

You need to make sure the extra calories are coming from nutritious foods that will help the development of your unborn baby. Some nutritious foods that will add the extra calories you need are fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grain products, and low-fat dairy products.

If you are worried you not getting the essential nutrients you need you can get prenatal vitamins from your doctor. Just remember that prenatal vitamins should only be used to supplement your diet not replace it. You will still need to make sure you eat the right foods along with taking your vitamins.

Get Your Folic

When you’re pregnant folic acid is important because it will help your baby grow properly and help you avoid birth complications. You need to consume at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. Food items rich in folic acid include dried beans, green leafy vegetables, and citrus fruits. Don’t consume more than 800 micrograms of folic acid to avoid putting yourself at risk.

You need to get adequate sleep when you’re pregnant because your body is working overtime to manage both you and your newborn. Pregnant women usually feel tired a lot more than normal. It is recommended pregnant women get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

It can be hard for you to get comfortable when you are trying to sleep. The best way to sleep comfortably is to lay on your side with your knees bent. Laying on your side will also keep the unborn baby’s weight from putting pressure on your large blood vessels. Moreover, doctors recommend laying on your left side instead of the right. When you lay on your left side it will allow better blood flow to the placenta and your baby.

Proper Oral Care

When you’re pregnant you need to take your oral care seriously. While you are pregnant you’ll be going through some hormonal changes that can lead to gum disease and bacteria. Bacteria can travel from the mother’s mouth through the blood and amniotic fluid in the womb of her unborn baby.

If the bacteria reach your baby it can cause premature birth, infections to the newborn, and early contractions. Proper dental hygiene is necessary during pregnancy to avoid complications in your pregnancy.  The best thing to do is to go to your dentist for a checkup and treat any oral issues at once.

Also, remember to regularly brush and floss your teeth to keep dental problems at bay. When you brush your teeth make sure you target the area near your gum line to help prevent oral complications. You should also think about switching sweets like candy and chocolate with wholesome foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, and cheese.

Some women believe that they should just wait until they have given birth to start exercising. However, exercising while pregnant has been proven to have its benefits. When you exercise during pregnancy you will do the following:

Low-intensity cardio exercises like walking or swimming are the best ways to go. Be sure to take frequent breaks and drink a lot of water while you are out there exercising.

Avoid Cosmetic Products

Of course, you want to look beautiful and vibrant while you’re pregnant. However, using certain cosmetic products can do more harm than good. Some cosmetic products have a chemical in it known as phthalates, which is unsafe for the development of your baby.

It is easy to inhale chemicals like phthalates, or these chemicals can be absorbed through your skin and reach your unborn baby. Look for cosmetic products that are not chemical-based, and if you can just avoid using all cosmetic products for 9 months.
