Winter Skin and Lip Care Tips



Cold winter air can really do a number on your skin and lips. So can the dry, forced air of the warm indoor environment. Red, irritated skin and flaky, burning lips can be frustrating, but there are some steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort.

Drink Your Water

Many people don’t realize they can treat dry skin and lips from the inside out, and we often don’t think about drinking as much water in the winter as we do in the summer months. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated is key to maintaining healthy skin.

Don’t Forget to Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the process of scrubbing off the dead cells that build upon our skin. Doing so reveals the smooth, healthy skin underneath. Be careful when exfoliating so that you don’t irritate the skin. There are products and scrubs you can buy for both body and face. Lip scrubs are available, as well. These products contain exfoliating ingredients to slough off dead skin cells, but if you would rather not buy a special wash, simply use a textured washcloth or loofah to gently scrub your skin. To remove dead skin cells from your lips, simply rub a damp washcloth or toothbrush over them.

Don’t Go Too Hot

Bathing in hot water is one of the worst things you can do for dry winter skin. Hot water strips the skin of moisture and irritates it. Use warm water to avoid doing further damage to your already sensitive skin.

Always Moisturise

Slather your skin and lips with moisture this winter. Choose products for your body that are thick and creamy in order to lock in moisture. Also, look for products that contain natural ingredients, as synthetic ones are more likely to remove moisture from the skin. Apply body cream directly after showering to ensure lasting hydration. For extra dry skin, you can apply more lotion before bed. Special exfoliating lotions can be used on the hands and feet to take care of rough, chapped knuckles and heels. Natural lip balms are the best choice for the winter months.
