#1 Have A Reason

The reason behind getting fit is what will keep you motivated. At the same time, it will determine the type of fitness routine that you do and the diet that you use. For instance, someone that wants to get stronger and build muscle mass will have a much different routine to someone that wants to develop their cardiovascular endurance. Someone building muscle mass will consume a lot of protein and do heavyweights, whereas the cardio routine will involve things such as running, swimming, lots of fresh fruits and water.

#2 Have A Plan

The main reason people don’t get started, or quit soon after they start, is because they don’t know where to start; they don’t have a plan. In your plan should be various milestones and aims. Are you looking to lose ½ a stone over the next 6 months? Do you want to be able to run 5 miles on a treadmill at a reasonable pace? If you have an aim, then you can work out a plan that will help you reach that aim! This might mean adapting your diet, making early morning commitments, or training after work.

#3 Classes

Gym classes are worth getting involved in if they are related to your routine. It is a lot easier to work out if you see other people doing the same. If you work out alone, then it is easy to stop a routine before you have finished, just because you are tired. This is not an option in a class and other members of the class will give you the motivation to carry on. Likewise, if you have a friend or family member that goes to a gym, then consider tagging along and being gym partners.

#4 Getting Professional Help

If you think you are the type of person that needs motivation and guidance in the gym getting professional help might be an option. If you do around 10 hours with a personal trainer that will generally give you a solid grounding to develop your routine.

They will be able to give you lots of advice relating to diet, hydration, and workout routines. Let them know exactly what your aims are and they will even sit down with you and map out a plan that will enable you to reach your goals.
