Our skin inevitably changes as we grow older, and we find ourselves yearning for the smooth, supple skin of our youth. Five days may not seem like long to turn years of gradual ageing around, but following and adhering to this step-by-step guide could really help improve the condition of your skin.
Day One: Get a Facial
Spa facial treatments aren’t just an indulgent treat. There are a huge variety of scientifically devised treatments out there to assist with every skin problem under the sun. If you’re stuck for where to start, try the Decleor Aromaplastie Facial, a 100% natural treatment suitable for all skin types, containing Linseed, Wheat Germ and Sunflower Seed Extracts. Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, you could go the whole hog and try a facial peel. Try MD Formulations Glycolic Acid Peel – it’s suitable for all skin types but particularly ideal for those with concerns around ageing. It eliminates dead skin, improves moisture levels and increases natural collagen production in the skin for a clear and bright complexion.
Day Two: Reassess Your Beauty Regime
Now you have had your facial, it’s down to you to make sure that the quality of skin treatment is maintained in your own home. Contrary to what you may think, the biggest problem with skin care regimes is using too many products. Don’t clog your skin up with a needless 10 step routine, it’s the quality of the products you are using which counts, not the quantity. Scale back your beauty routine and ensure that the products that you are using are right for your skin type. We would recommend using one gentle face wash, a day moisturiser and a night cream daily and using an exfoliator two or three times a week. When choosing your day cream or your foundation, make sure that they have an SPF of at least 20, as sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of premature ageing.
Day Three: Do Some Cardio
Not only does exercise help you stay slender, it also has a direct effect on your skin’s appearance. When you are exercising, your heart pumps oxygen-rich blood around your body at an increased rate – that’s what leaves you with an embarrassing red face as you walk out of the gym. However, once the redness fades, you are left with skin which is healthier, more radiant and revitalised. Exercise has also been proven to reduce stress, a big factor in skin conditions such as acne and eczema. Do at least 30 minutes cardio today, whether it is going for a run in the sun, a swim at the gym or even walking to work instead of taking the car. Your skin and body will reap the benefits.
Day Four: Have Forty Winks
Studies show that the majority of people in the UK today feel that they don’t get enough sleep. If you are in this majority and are hankering after younger looking skin, you need to change this habit today. When you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, the effects are directly reflected in your face, with bigger bags under the eyes and skin looking older and more sunken. Ensure you get a good amount of sleep today; treat yourself to a lie in, go to bed earlier or take an afternoon nap if you can. When you are sleeping your body is working away repairing the daily damage inflicted on skin from stress, sun and other lifestyle factors. Sleep gives your body a chance to refresh and rejuvenate, so try to get at least 7 hours every day. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing, you know!
Day Three: Go Green
No, you don’t need to become a hippy to get healthier skin. Simply swap your morning tea or coffee for a green tea today and your skin will love you for it. Green tea contains a higher level of a substance called catechins than regular black tea, known to be a source of powerful antioxidants. It has been proven to directly assist with rejuvenating the skin, reversing the ageing process at a cellular level. And if that’s not enough to convince you, it can also help fight acne and prevent skin cancer! Continue the green theme throughout the day and for your dinner tonight, ensure you incorporate lots of leafy green vegetables, such as spinach or lettuce. They are packed with vitamins, particularly Vitamin A, which can assist with the growth and repair of the body’s skin tissue.
Day Five: Relax
You have been working hard on your skin all week, it’s time to relax! Stress can take its toll on your skin over time, so take an hour out for yourself today to do whatever you want. Put all worries out of your mind and concentrate on looking after yourself. You could try a little meditation, a great way to calm your mind. Or, for the ultimate relaxation, book in at your spa or beauty salon for a massage. Choose from a head massage, full body massage, aromatherapy massage and more – there is a plethora of massage treatments available with the sole aim of reducing stress and inducing relaxation.
