Benefits of Invisalign Braces Over Traditional Braces

Why do orthodontists recommend Invisalign over traditional braces for orthodontic treatment? There are several reasons, starting with greater levels of comfort to lower costs. Why should you prefer Invisalign over braces? Read on to know the answer.

Patient Preparedness

Traditional Braces: Patients can never know what to expect, or how long the treatment will take. The orthodontist will take it all on a trial-and-error basis and the end result can be seen only when the treatment is over.

Invisalign: Patients can view the projected outcome of their treatment via computerized 3D imaging and know what to expect and what their teeth will look like ultimately.

Traditional Braces: They are highly visible, aesthetically unappealing, and can cause discomfiture in social situations. People who are naturally shy are further rendered asocial by these braces.

Invisalign: These clear aligners are virtually invisible; patients can continue with their normal lives without feeling discomfited.

Comfort and Safety

Traditional Braces:  These require metal wires and brackets; the wires tend to poke into tender gums, causing pain and discomfort. The brace wires can cause mouth sores. Traditional braces apply a lot of force on teeth to straighten them, which can cause tooth discoloration. Also, Patients cannot take off the braces whenever required.

Invisalign: These clear plastic aligners are smooth and comfortable to wear, with rounded edges that sit gently against gums. They can be removed at any time by the patient.

Traditional Braces:  Brushing and flossing require a lot of effort, and food particles tend to get trapped behind the metal braces, giving rise to decay and plaque.

Invisalign: Can be easily removed by patients and cleaned easily. Patients can brush and floss their teeth in the normal way and then put on their aligners again.

Traditional Braces:   Patients have to avoid eating foods that stick to braces such as candy, pastries, toffee, taffy, popcorn, bagels, hard-crusted bread, chips, and many more. Patients also experience some difficulty while eating.

Invisalign: Patients can eat whatever they want; nothing will stick to the plastic aligners. If they want to, they can take off the aligners while eating especially sticky or rich foods.

Traditional Braces: Requires repeated visits to the orthodontist for minor adjustments and fixing of issues. Treatment can go on for a long time, even 5 years or more. The end result may not be pleasing to the eye, as there can be marks where the braces have pressed too hard. There can be discolored teeth, decayed teeth, and diseased gums as well.

Invisalign: Once the aligners are in place, a visit to an orthodontist once in 4 to 6 weeks will suffice for minor adjustments and monitoring. The total treatment can be completed within a year and a half, and the result will be beautifully straightened teeth without any marks, discolorations, or tooth damage.

Traditional Braces: Traditional braces do tend to cost lesser than Invisalign at the beginning, but the supporting costs are many. Special cleaning tools are required and replacing individual brackets can be quite expensive.

Invisalign: Though these cost more, they are worth every penny. There are no secondary surprise costs or costs towards maintenance. Also, doctor visits are minimal so you’ll be saving on that.
