Driving around in a truck for hours every day can make you pretty hungry. When the hunger strikes, it can be easy to stop off at a service station and head to the nearest burger joint. This doesn’t have to be the case though. Many lorry drivers complain about putting the pounds on whilst driving and not getting enough exercise, but keeping trim could be easier than you think. If you’d like to lose a bit of weight, all you need is a bit of self-control to avoid the fast-food outlets and eat healthily. Here are some top tips for doing so by choosing food and drink that will be good for the body:


For a snack that you can eat throughout the day, there’s nothing better and easier than a bag of nuts. Nuts such as almonds and walnuts are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and essential unsaturated fats and best of all, they’re quick and convenient to eat. Simply keep a bag on your dashboard and nibble on a few whenever you get the urge for a snack.


If you fancy something tasty when you pull over your lorry, yogurt is a great option. Rather than the sugary yogurts you can get with added chocolate or syrup, stick to an organic or Greek-style yogurt that is packed full of probiotics that are good for the body. Eating small yogurts will help you feel fuller for longer and they can easily be stored in a refrigerator if your truck has one.


If you’re stuck on a warm truck for several hours a day, it’s important to stay hydrated. Many drivers tend to drink tea and coffee to stay alert, but this isn’t always good for you. Try to avoid fizzy drinks too as these are often incredibly high in sugar. There really is nothing better than water so make sure you have plenty with you. It’s even better if you have a refrigerator in your cab as you can keep it cool while you drive.

Carrot sticks

Staring at the same road for hours every day can get pretty dull and many drivers eat out of sheer boredom. If this is the case, you can keep the mouth occupied by having a packet of carrot sticks to eat. They might not be as tasty as bar chocolate but they’re a million times better for you! If you’re not keen on carrots, chewing sugar-free gum is another option as it’ll trick your mind into thinking you’re eating.


It is important lorry drivers get some protein into their diet, but don’t fall into the trap of buying fatty foods such as burgers and meatballs. Turkey is one of the leanest meats around so you won’t be adding loads of fat to your body and it also tastes good too! If you’re buying a turkey for a sandwich, be sure to get wholemeal bread as it’s a much better source of fiber than white bread.
