The Do’s And Don’ts Of Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are an easy and simple way to get make a statement. The best extensions are those that have a bit of gloss or shine and some thickness, which resembles the look of natural hair. Some of the top actresses, musicians, and models now wear extensions, but a few of those celebrities wear fake-looking hair. By following a few simple tips, you can make your extensions look as natural as your own hair.

The biggest don’t when it comes to extensions is don’t use hot water. Extremely hot water is dangerous to extensions, and the water can cause the ends to frizz, making a noticeable difference between your natural hair and the extensions. That doesn’t mean you need to avoid jumping in a hot tub or Jacuzzi, but it does mean that you should avoid putting your hair in the water. If you find yourself in hot water, cover your hair with a shower cap or wear your hair up and off your shoulders.

When taking a shower, adjust the water temperature so that it is slightly warm, not hot, to the touch. Apply a dab of shampoo to your hands, gently rub it around and then wipe it through your hair. After rinsing your hair, apply a small amount of conditioner onto the tips of your hair and rinse away. Avoid putting conditioner on the roots of the extensions, and you should never use a hair mask or leave-in conditioner. The greasy nature of these products can actually cause the extensions to pull away from your head and hair.

Once you finish with your shower, use a towel to gently dry your extensions. Do not use a hairdryer as the heat from the hairdryer can loosen the extensions. If you prefer the natural look, gently blot your hair with a towel and let the extensions air dry. After your hair is dry, you can use a wide-tooth comb to brush and style the extensions. Never use a fine-tooth comb or an ordinary brush because the bristles can damage the extensions. If you take showers at night, make sure that your hair feels dry to the touch before climbing into bed. Sleeping on wet extensions can cause the hair to come loose.

Extensions are easy to care for, even while traveling on vacation. The best tip for taking care of your hair on vacation is to avoid swimming pools and the ocean. Chlorine found in pool water can change the color and texture of the extensions, ruining the look that you want. The saltwater from oceans can equally damage your extensions, causing the extensions to slowly break down or loosen.

When you opt for extensions, make sure that you give your scalp a break. While you might feel tempted to quickly go from one look to the next without taking a break from extensions, this is one of the most dangerous things that you can do. It can damage your scalp and cause you to suffer hair loss. If you want to rock the look of extensions, follow this tip and take a break between uses.
