Orthodontic case, more commonly known as braces are devices used by dentists to straighten and align teeth that may be out of alignment. They are used to correct what is known as underbites, overbites, deep bites and cross bites, all describing different kinds of misalignment of the teeth.
They also come in handy in the correction of crooked teeth, gaps between teeth and many other little defections that may occur in the teeth and even jaw. They are as important for cosmetic treatments as they are for structural ones. You can read about them here.
One thing that we can all agree on is that these devices have proven to be quite important, helping improve smiles and dental health across the world.
What are Invisible Braces?
There are different types of braces currently available. Some of the more common types include: metal wired, gold plated stainless steel, lingual, titanium, customized orthodontic treatment systems and removable, clear aligners.
Traditionally, these braces are uncomfortable and unsightly. Many young people have found themselves to be the subject of fun and ridicule because they had to wear these devices to correct some dental imperfection. Invisible braces basically prevent this.
As the name suggests, this category of the device covers the different types that can be worn without it being immediately obvious that the individual has one on. Some of the types listed above fall into this category. Examples include: lingual braces and clear aligners.
This is the opposite of the more traditional labial bracing in which we see fixed braces glued to the part of the teeth facing the lips which is what makes it visible to the onlooker (even when tooth colored materials are used). In this case, the braces are fixed to the lingual part of the teeth which is the inner part, away from the view of the onlooker. This means that whether the material used is metal or tooth colored, it will not matter at least with regards to cosmetics. This is why they are also regarded as invisible.
This describes what we called clear, invisible braces in the title. The double qualifiers indicate that they are not readily visible to the eye because they are made of a clear material and not because they hidden as in the case of the lingual fixing described above.
With these aligners, the device is not fixed but worn and can be removed by the wearer at any time. You can learn more about the difference between the two here: https://www.blos.co.uk/blog/lingual-braces-vs-invisalign/.
In the next section we will focus on discussing the benefits of the clear aligners.
What Benefits Do they Offer?
Having looked at the various options that we can use for invisible bracing, let us now focus on the benefits that Invisalign’s clear option offers.
This benefit should be obvious given the name of the device. Though it is tagged invisible, it is not entirely so. Upon close examination, someone near you may be able to see that you have something on your teeth though it will not be as obvious as the traditional option.
Traditional braces can only be removed by a dentist which can be quite inconveniencing. This however is different as it can be removed by the wearer at any time. It is however advised that it be left on for between 20 to 22 hours daily for best results.
Easy for Oral Hygiene
The fact that it is removable also means that you can eat without it and also clean your mouth thoroughly. This is a major issue with the lingual option which catches a lot of food particles which are then difficult to wash out.
This option costs far less than any other invisible bracing method you can go for. This is also an important benefit.
Is it all about benefits? Are there no disadvantages we should be aware of?
Well, there are a number of disadvantages you should be aware of should you be considering going for a clear, invisible brace.
They Take Longer
One thing to know about this option is that it can take longer to achieve the result you seek. Depending on the extent of work that needs to be done, it can take anywhere from 10 to 24 months. You will also need to go through a set of these custom designed pieces throughout the length of the treatment.
Best for Minor Cases
If the case to be treated is a major one, then this may not be your best option. Traditional braces are still regarded as the most reliable for the more severe cases.
Is Easy to Remove
It’s interesting that the same thing we earlier considered a benefit is also considered a disadvantage. The fixed bracing method leaves you with no immediate option but to continue with the program or visit a dentist to have it removed. This however gives you the option of removing it at any time. It is therefore easy for the full effects of the treatment not to be achieved since the patient may not be committed to having it on for at least 22 hours a day.
Achieving a Perfect Result is More Difficult
Because of the way it is designed, it is a bit more difficult for Orthodontists to achieve the kind of perfect results they can with tradition options. This again is why it is best for less serious cases.
