Although aging increases the likelihood of suffering from various ailments, experiencing pain is not a healthy state of any age. It is instead a sign that something is going wrong in your body.
It is difficult to predict what kind of pain will happen to you later in life. However, certain painful conditions occur more frequently in a given age.
4 golden rules
No matter what your age is, these four simple rules will help in cases where the pain is a fact. Pain removal requires measures to be taken. Coming to terms with pain or its denial will not solve your problem.
Acute pain should be treated immediately after its appearance. Thus you will prevent its chronification.
– Check the level of vitamin D in your body. Its deficiency increases the risk of microfractures, which are often the cause of pain due to osteoporotic bone changes.
– Don’t gain weight. Overweight overloads your joints and increases the risk of developing joint pain in the knees and waist significantly.
– Make sure you have enough sleep. Lack of sleep can exacerbate painful symptoms and contribute to the development of depression and muscle cramps. If you suffer from insomnia, which you cannot handle, it is best to consult your physician who will, if necessary, prescribe the appropriate treatment.
– Depression. Chronic pain often goes hand in hand with depression, which may remain unrecognized. Depression does not just deal with the pain more difficultly, but it also increases the sense of it. If you suffer from chronic pain, tell your doctor how you feel emotionally.
The most common pain in your 30s
A headache is one of the most common forms of pain as a whole. Its peak is observed, however, in the thirties, according to experts.
Studies have shown that in the age range between 35 and 45 years, the probability of suffering from a migraine is highest. It is 2-3 times more common in women than in men, and most often it is felt as a throbbing pain.
A tension headache is the most common and is characterized by persistent pain and pressure, which can increase with age.
Solution: search for help
The reason for the large percentage of headaches remains unknown, making their treatment extremely difficult, but not impossible. So do not reconcile with pain and do not give up if the first treatment has not been carried out successfully.
There are a variety of therapeutic approaches applied with great success for various types of a headache. However, do not expect a definitive cure.
Acupuncture and other techniques to train the body and mind (e.g., yoga) may be useful in combating headaches.
Pain during physical overload
Besides headaches, another common cause of pain after the age of 30 is physical overload. Characteristic of this age are muscle pain and tendinitis (inflammation of the tendon). Back pain can also start in the 30s and 40s.
Solution: Get to know your body
You must learn to use your body rationally without subjecting the muscles and joints to unnecessary risk. For example, you can learn to use the power of your legs when lifting heavy objects. This will avoid overloading the waist. Also avoid working with your hands above your head, because this strains the neck and hands unnecessarily.
Pay attention to how you use your body during daily tasks such as cooking, driving, cleaning and more.
Optimize your activities at work and on the computer to prevent future injuries and pain.
The most common pains in the 40s and 50s
Arthritis and back pain
It’s usually the age, in which the first symptoms of osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease appear.
Degenerative disc disease causes premature wear of the intervertebral discs that act as shock absorbers of the spine and allow it to perform different movements. This disease can cause pain, limit the range of motion and inflame the muscles and tendons. Chronic back pain or neck pain, and pain in the joints of the hands, legs or pelvis begins most often after the age of 40.
The two risk groups for arthritis are people of extremes – those who systematically overload the musculoskeletal system with physical activity and have suffered injuries, and those who do not exercise at all.
Solution: Conservative treatment
When it comes to treating short-term pain in the joints or waist, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the drugs of the first choice. At first, most suitable is acetylsalicylic acid and ibuprofen. The duration of the therapy with NSAIDs should be at least 10 to 14 days to manifest the full anti-inflammatory effect of the drug.
As for the chronic back pain, many hastily decide that they need surgery. They believe that the problem is purely mechanical and has to be corrected, like repairing a car. Often, however, things are far more complicated, and surgery definitely does not solve the problem, and may even exacerbate painful symptoms.
Experts advise to initially turn to non-invasive methods of treatment – physiotherapy, local injections of corticosteroids, local anesthetic or a combination of these treatment methods for a better effect.
Acupuncture can also be quite useful in relieving painful symptoms.
Surgery should be performed only when absolutely necessary.
Gain strength and balance
Reinforcing the muscles of the spine, including abdominal muscles, is also an essential step towards relieving of a backache. Quadriceps femoral muscle, located on the anterior surface of the thigh, also requires additional training, experts say.
After the age of 60, arthritis and degenerative spinal diseases become a more common cause of pain. Again, a combination of medication and treatments like acupuncture and yoga is recommended.
Elderly people are more affected by broken bones and injuries resulting from falls. The incidence of malignant diseases at this age increases.
Solution: Make it a priority
Pain that keeps you awake at night and disturbs your social and family life often leads to a rapid deterioration of your condition. Therefore it is essential that it be treated so as not to impede your orderly existence.
