Fighting Cancer with Positive Thinking

Dealing with cancer is no simple burden.  Even under the best of circumstances, you are dealing with a trying time wherein your health, looks, and time are severely impacted.  Receiving this diagnosis can be life-altering, but it doesn’t mean that you should give up.  There are several things that you should do to keep your morale and health as positive as possible after you find out you have cancer.

Know that you are Not Alone

Receiving news of your declining health can be hard to process.  It may seem like the sort of thing that “happens to other people.”  Over 1.5 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year in the United States.  Over half of them were able to fight back against it and push through.

Take comfort in your family during this time, as they are your best allies in fighting cancer.  Stay positive with them, but know that when you feel like they don’t understand, there are places to go.  There are support groups available to share your story with others struggling through the same thing.  Solidarity during this trying time can be of great comfort, and you can gain insight into your affliction by talking to others with cancer.

Take Comfort in the Little Things

When faced with a potentially life-threatening condition, your priorities may shift.  You may fear the worst, and rush to accomplish things with what you view as your remaining time.  While it is good to evaluate where you are in life, a positive outlook can help you and keep you from stressing out by taking on too much.

You may lose weight or your hair during chemotherapy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look good. Confidence in your appearance will help you feel better inside as well.  Make a point to schedule at least one day a week that is for relaxation.  Take up an old hobby, or spend time with friends.  Put cancer aside, and focus on enjoying yourself.

Protect your Health

Positive thinking has been shown to have an amazing effect on recovery in many cases.  Thinking pleasant thoughts, however, is not enough.  Set up a calendar to handle your medical appointments, and make someone reliable aware of it.  Also, make sure that at least one other person is aware of your pill sorter so that you stay on top of things.  By following your doctor’s orders, you are increasing your chances of improving your health.
