Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
This seems like an odd way to get a tan, but according to scientists it can work. Thanks to the presence of nutrients called carotenoids, consuming five servings of orange or green produce every day for a month will help tan your skin.
Drink lots of water
To make sure that your skin has a healthy tan, it needs to be healthy. And the best way to do that is by drinking lots of water. This will keep the skin hydrated, so it won’t start flaking under the sunlight. Do not just drink lots of water while tanning, but throughout the day.
Exfoliate your skin
This is necessary for self tanning and natural tanning. The terrible orange-y color or messy streaks on some people are because some people don’t know the importance of exfoliation before using a tanning salon or a tanning lotion. Exfoliation makes sure that the surface of the skin is smooth, so that the tanning formula can evenly be applied and absorbed. It is a similar case when you are trying to tan the natural way, the dead skin covering the good skin will block the sun and prevent you from tanning evenly. Exfoliate your skin by gently scrubbing it with a loofah, not hard enough to hurt the good skin underneath, but hard enough to remove the dead skin. Concentrate on your knees and elbows, these areas often contain a significant amount of dead skin cells.
Use a strong sunblock
When tanning, most people do not use a strong sunblock, preferring to use a light one in order to expose their skin to the most sun. This is unhealthy because in case of strong sunlight you will get sunburned and that kills the skin cells which you are trying to color. Use a sunblock of at least SPF 30. It is no use applying sunblock while you are tanning, it needs at least half an hour to sink in and become effective so plan ahead.
Apply tanner on your lower body first
When applying a tanning lotion in the shower, it seems the easiest to rub it on the torso first. This is a bad idea because when you apply it to the lower body next you will end up with strange looking pleats. Simply rub the lotion on your legs and ankles first. Wait a few minutes for the lotion to dry and then move on to the upper body.
