Making it through flu season without contracting the nasty virus can feel like a victory. However, it is not all just a matter of luck. Here are some steps you can take to ensure your health and the health of your family.
Get a Flu Shot
There is a lot of discrepancy about whether or not flu shots are effective in preventing the flu. While it is not totally foolproof, you are better protected if you get the flu shot as opposed to skipping it.
Increase Vitamin C Intake
Vitamin C is extremely powerful in fighting against the flu and other colds. You need to up your intake of this potent vitamin during the vulnerable seasons. Whether you take it in through a cough drop, drink mix, or straight from the source, it is essential to proper health.
Rest and Fluids
Every sick person is told to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. This applies to healthy people as well. If you are well rested and well hydrated, your body can devote more of its energy to fighting off whatever works its way into your body.

It is unfortunate that flu season corresponds with a season when people are paying less attention to what they are putting in their body. When the body is at risk for infection, it is more important that you get the proper nutrients. Washing your hands is the best way to arm yourself against infection. However, make sure everything is disinfected. Wipe down the cart at the grocery store. Wash the towels in your home regularly. Do not give the bacteria a chance to grow. This also means that you should not share drinks with anyone else. Even if they are not showing outward signs of having the flu, they could be carrying a dormant virus.
Be Aware in Public Places
The flu and colds are often transmitted in public places where there are a lot of people. For example, if you know you are going to a large gathering, such as a concert or sporting event, make sure you are well-prepared. Get plenty of rest the night before, ingest an extra boost of Vitamin C, and keep your hands clean. Consider keeping wipes or disinfectant lotion in your purse or pocket.
