Understanding the Ketogenic Diet. Is It for Everyone?

This low-carb, high-fat diet is also easier to stay on compared to others. While cheat meals are not advisable due to their effect on ketosis, you can have snacks. However before you can get on the ketogenic diet, ask yourself whether it is good for you. Below we have compiled a few scenarios that would rule out the possibility of following this low-carb diet.

1. Pregnant and Nursing Women

Ketosis has been shown to have some side effects such as weight loss, hormonal changes and even nutrient deficiencies. All these side effects are not good for the mother or the fetus. Pregnant women are also supposed to consume a lot of proteins and plant fiber to promote fetal growth. Being on a ketogenic diet can deprive the mother and child of these vital nutrients leading to some health problems.

2. Diabetes

During the initial stages of ketosis, it is not uncommon for an individual to experience low blood sugar. While a healthy person can recover from this state, it is far more dangerous for a person with diabetes especially if you are on medication to help regulate the level of blood sugar. If you have diabetes, you should get your doctor’s advice and only get on the ketogenic diet under close supervision.

3. Thyroid Conditions

A person with a thyroid condition is advised to avoid low carbohydrate diets including the keto diet. Studies have shown that a low-carb diet will only worsen a thyroid condition. They cause side effects such as brain fog and sleep problems.

4. Kidney Stones

One of the adverse side effects of a ketogenic diet is an increased susceptibility to kidney stones. This means that if you have been affected by kidney stones in the past the chances of recurrence are even higher.

5. Underweight

One of the many benefits of a ketogenic diet is its ability to facilitate weight loss. If you are underweight and you have problems packing on some pounds then the ketogenic diet might not be the best fit for you. It will only lead to more weight loss.

The benefits of a ketogenic diet are immensely advantageous to all those who choose to follow it. However, just like everything, it has its downsides and these make it unsuitable for people with the above conditions. Luckily for some conditions with the close supervision of a doctor, they can still get on the ketogenic diet bandwagon.
