Reclaim Your Sexy Skin for Spring!

After emerging from the chills and thrills of winter, my dry skin is certainly ready for a little relief! While transitioning into this blossoming season, I always have to be equipped with my skincare weapons of choice to combat the less-than-lovely effects that winter left my skin. Fine lines and huge pores seem to be two of winter’s favorite parting gifts, due to heaters that attempt to make any inside space the Gobi desert.

Even while emerging into warmer weather, heaters still may remain on while February takes its leave. Heaters suck up the humidity and moisture in the air, causing the skin to become dry and lose its elasticity and suppleness. This dryness denies the skin room to “bounce back” after sharing a hard laugh with your best friend or glaring at your ex, leaving those fine lines that every woman resents.

Heat also causes pores to expand, as your body is expecting sweat and other impurities to exit, but the fact is it’s as dry as a desert and impurities have no medium to make their escape. Effects like this are what leave you crying over a mirror because your face has more craters than the moon.

So what do you do to successfully combat these unsightly effects?

Choosing a moisturizer that contains emollients and humectants is essential. These two scary words will turn out to be your skin’s best friends this season, as these are properties in skin products that replenish dehydrated skin and restore dewiness. Humectants attract water from the atmosphere to the top of the epidermis (the very top layer of the skin). Emollients trap the water collected by humectants and bind it to the surface skin cells by coating the skin and allowing the water to penetrate and work its hydrating magic.

After giving your face a good wash, don’t you dare dry it off! While your face is still wet, apply a quarter size dot of moisturizer on your forehead, under eyes, cheekbones, and chin, and gently spread it around. While this seems rather odd to apply moisturizer to a wet face, this ensures that all the water left on your face binds, penetrates, and hydrates the deep dermal layers of the skin, restoring elasticity and suppleness.

Choose a fragrance-free moisturizer, as the fragrance is infamous for causing irritation and inflammation.

Look for emollients and humectants in the ingredients. Reading the back of products can be undeniably overwhelming, so here are a few ingredients to narrow your search and know you getting the right product that will do the job.

Humectants are glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, lactic acid, collagen, sodium PCA, colloidal oatmeal, and hyaluronic acid.

Emollients are cocoa butter, shea butter, sweet almond oil, apricot oil, mineral oil, and petrolatum.

My go-to product for winter (and every season for that matter!) is hands-down Cetaphil  Moisturizing Cream ($10.79 at Target), which is fragrance-free and contains emollients and humectants like petroleum and glycerin. This is a heavy moisturizer and is great for those who are prone to dry skin.

For a lighter version of this product, choose Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, which is lighter and gives the skin more room to breathe.

With these few tweaks to your skin regime, you can reclaim your sexy, radiant skin in time for this dewy season!
