CBD as Nature’s Anti-Inflammatory

Inflammation is a commonly used and more often confused term. Generally speaking, experiencing inflammation is a good thing, as it’s a sign that your immune system and healing processes are working properly. But when the condition is prolonged, it can lead to major health issues. CBD is proving to be an effective anti-inflammatory, working with receptors in our body to help mitigate an overactive healing response. Here we take a brief look at the types of inflammation, common signs, causes, and ways CBD may help.

Inflammation: Your Body’s Healing Signal

There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic.

If you’ve ever cut your finger, broken your bone, or even just been bit by a pesky bug, you’ve experienced acute inflammation. The rapid onset of classic signs includes pain, redness, swelling, and heat, which are caused by the increase of blood flow to the affected area. A battalion of white blood cells surrounds the area, battling it out against bacteria to keep it away from the wound or simply protecting the injury site from further damage.

Essentially, your white blood cells isolate the damaged area and speed along the healing process, allowing the rest of your body to continue working even as you’re recovering from the initial injury. Acute inflammation is typically experienced for a shorter amount of time (days to weeks), as long as the area is kept clean and protected.

While inflammation is a sign that your body is working to keep you healthy, chronic inflammation puts it on high-alert around the clock. As a response to something the body either can’t recognize or mistakenly recognizes, the body goes into overdrive trying to fight it off. Examples include:

  • Irritants and allergens
  • Autoimmune disorders, like lupus and certain types of arthritis
  • Exposure to chemicals
  • Autoinflammatory diseases, in which the body signals for an immune response even when there is no underlying cause
  • Acute inflammation that becomes persistent

With the body’s immune response on overdrive, inflammation may result in connective tissue damage, which is where major diseases come into play. Under normal circumstances, the body undergoes a process of oxidation, where free radicals and antioxidants work hand in hand to keep your body in balance. When out of sync, the body experiences oxidative stress. This imbalance can cause damage to tissues, which increases the release of more free radicals to try to repair the damage, thus setting off a nasty cycle that makes the condition progressively worse.

Chronic inflammation is known as a major contributing factor to a gamut of illnesses and diseases, including asthma, ulcers, and Chron’s disease, and may also have links to others including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and even allergies. A number of factors may increase the chance of developing chronic inflammation, including stress, lack of sleep, smoking, obesity, age, and diet.

CBD and Inflammation

CBD, a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, is increasingly lauded for its effectiveness in reducing inflammation. CBD is jam-packed with the healing power of cannabinoids, which works with our endocannabinoid system to regulate our body’s natural functions, including a key role in our immune system.

Research isn’t conclusive about how exactly it works, but what we do know is the CB2 receptor in our endocannabinoid system is responsible for managing pain and inflammation. When used, CBD appears to affect the way the receptor responds to signals it receives, which may support a desired immune response to pain and inflammation. Additional research is needed to have a more definitive answer on how exactly how it works, along with understanding the most effective delivery mechanism and dosage, but preliminary findings are encouraging.

As always, CBD is not a cure and – especially when tackling inflammation – is best used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise.

For those currently experiencing chronic inflammation, a great option to consider is Allvane Pain Formula Hemp Extract Tincture. Designed to be taken orally, tinctures are CBD in liquid form, and Allvane’s use a base of coconut oil to aid in absorption. This CBD tincture is specially formulated with terpenes known for their ability to ease inflammation, soothe aches, and provide a healthy dose of antioxidants to help balance free radicals and lessen the extent of oxidative stress.

If you’re experiencing pain in a specific area of your body, another option is to consider is a topical product, like a Hemp Extract Warming Salve or Hemp Extract Cooling Roll-On. Topicals are applied directly to the area of your body causing you discomfort and can be applied throughout the day, as needed.
