CBD is a health phenomenon
To explain why CBD is so big in the health and wellness space right now, we need to first understand what CBD actually is.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, and it is one of more than 100 cannabinoids, or active “ingredients,” in the drug marijuana. Like its more famous (until recently, anyway) cousin THC, CBD is a chemical that exists in marijuana and does something.
But what’s that something? It varies quite a bit from cannabinoid to cannabinoid. THC, for instance, is primarily responsible for marijuana’s famous high. CBD, on the other hand, seems to offer more as marijuana’s healthy side.
The jury is still out on some of CBD’s effects, but what we know so far is encouraging. Studies have linked CBD to a variety of health benefits, from lower anxiety levels to the suppression of seizures.
Better late than never
Why is CBD so big now, when it never was before? Well, until recently, we didn’t know as much about CBD as we might have liked to (in fact, as mentioned above, we’re still learning a whole lot more).
CBD is derived from the plant marijuana. Unlike THC, it is non-psychoactive, which means that it won’t get you high. But CBD had to be discovered and extracted from marijuana, and it had to be tested for its properties to be found. And, of course, it had to be extracted and produced at scale for consumers.
All of this was pretty hard to do back when marijuana was more widely illegal. In fact, marijuana is still illegal at the federal level. To be clear, this doesn’t mean CBD is illegal — it’s just that marijuana’s complicated legal history and status made it hard to do legitimate research on the drug, manufacture products related to it, and overcome unfortunate stigmas and connotations.
The change in our marijuana laws and culture has allowed CBD research and production to accelerate quickly, and it has done similar things to the market for CBD.
CBD’s extremely fast growth (like that of the broader — albeit more narrowly legal — marijuana industry) is partly because it was artificially held back for so long. But better late than never, because things are expanding extremely fast.
You should, of course, do your research into CBD’s legal status in your state before you make the choice to get on board and stock CBD products. However, the odds are definitely in your favor.
