CBD is NOT Pot or Weed. It Actually Treats Several Illnesses

With the latest breakthrough in CBD / cannabidiol products that serves to alleviate symptoms of a variety of illnesses, it is important to educate yourself with the basics. The first thing to know, is that CBD is not pot, or weed that gets you high. The second is, that “made in USA” from organic produce that is free of pesticides is more important than you think.

Starting with the basics:

The cannabis plant consists of 104 compounds, of which the best known until recently was delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most active ingredient in marijuana. THC is the component which breaks down when heated and alters the state of mind of its users or creates a “high” as it is more commonly called.

Another compound of the cannabis plant is cannabidiol (CBD), also found in marijuana, that does not cause psychoactive changes. Most importantly, studies and research has shown CBD to produce alleviation from certain chronic problems and according to some scientists it appears to have medicinal benefits that include strong antioxidants and stress reducing properties.

Only hemp plants which have not been selectively bred to produce higher levels of THC are the correct source for CBD.

The human body also produces its own cannabinoids and has two types of receptors. Initially it was thought that CBD attached itself to these, but more recent research has shown that the use of CBD encourages the body to use its own cannabinoids.

How can CBD use benefit our health? We found research cases for at least 10 problematic illnesses, where CBD is mentioned as a possible treatment for symptoms:

  1. Chronic pain and inflammation

Sufferers rely on over-the – counter medications which become less effective over time. CBD has been used as a pain killer for over two millennia and many believe that it is a natural alternative and extremely effective. The Journal of Experimental Medicine (1) published a study in 2012 that showed how chronic pain and inflammation were greatly reduced in some of the mice and rats tested. In their conclusion they suggested that this was due to the CBD compounds found in marijuana.

  1. Epilepsy

Parents of children with epilepsy rejoiced when in June 2018 the FDA approved the use of Epidiolex (CBD) for treating two types of epilepsy that affect children mostly.

  • Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) affects 3-5 year olds.
  • Dravet syndrome (DS) usually appears within the first year of a child’s life and is a rare genetic condition where fever- related seizures occur frequently.

Both types of seizures are difficult to control with other types of drugs.

  1. Neurological disorders

CBD is proving to be effective in their treatment and a lot of research is currently concentrated on these disorders.

Epilepsy is linked to several complications, which include brain degeneration, neuronal injury and psychiatric conditions.

In a 2012 study (9), the authors found that CBD may have a similar effect as some antipsychotic medications and that it could prove to be effective and safe when treating schizophrenia.

  1. Cancer

The fight to prevent the spread and growth of cancerous cells is an area where studies have found evidence of the significant role CBD’s can play. In their 2013 review, published in The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (2), the authors found evidence of how CBD assisted in preventing the spread of some types of cancer cells, while also destroying them.

They discussed the low levels of toxicity present in CBD and called for further research into the inclusion of CBD to the standard treatments already available to patients.

  1. Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest itself in many forms: post traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, social anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder are a few examples.

According to the authors of a review from Neurotherapeutics (3), anxiety can be reduced when treated with CBD. They note that many patients turn to CBD and discontinue prescribed medications because of unpleasant symptoms and side effects they cause.

  1. Type 1 diabetes

This type of diabetes is caused by inflammation that results from an immune system attack of the pancreas.  In 2016, Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation (4) published promising research on how CBD eases the inflammation.  In another study later that year (10) it was suggested that not only would the inflammation be reduced, but the onset of type 1 diabetes could also be delayed.

  1. Heart Problems

High blood pressure is the number one contributor to heart attacks and strokes (5).  CBD has proven to be beneficial to the heart and the circulation as it lowers high blood pressure.

  1. Acne

Acne results from over active sebaceous glands which lead to inflammation. In a 2014 study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (6), it was found that CBD reduced sebum production, one of the main causes of acne.

  1. Alzheimer’s disease

Research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (7), produced positive findings that people in the early stages of the disease can be effectively treated with CBD. Initial evidence shows a slowing down in its progression.

  1. Smoking

According to a study published in Addictive Behaviors (11), smokers can reduce the amount of cigarettes smoked by using an inhaler with CBD. In another review, published in Neurotherapeutics (8), CBD showed promising results in treating other addiction disorders.

In all of the above studies mentioned the authors recommend further research.

Side effects of CBD Oil

There is limited research on CBD oil because cannabis is a Schedule 1 substance, making it highly regulated. There is no major risk to users but some may have side effects such as: depression, dizziness, lowered blood pressure, hallucinations, insomnia and irritability

Legality of CBD oil

The law is changing fast: with state law outpacing federal law in the US – and with the majority of EU states now selling CBD products. In some states of the US it is still illegal to purchase CBD oil and certain states that have legalized it for medicinal use require users to apply for a special license.

An online check is best to keep up to date with all legal developments in the field. The FDA has so far only approved CBD for the treatment of epilepsy as mentioned earlier in the article.

What manufacturers do to ensure the highest CBD quality:

We asked Edmon Mamane, the CEO of Terravida, a leading US manufacturer what they do to ensure the highest quality in CBD/cannabidiol products. He said: “We spend so much more than other companies to ensure the best possible experience when people consume CBD.

There is no way that we’ll ever sell unvetted products from ASIA that are affected by pesticides. Our R&D department constantly look for ways to release the purest CBD products containing a THC component that is close to zero – and certainly, it is all made in the US”. Terravidaonline.com is a company is based in Colorado, which is a global supplier of CBD, dealing with both wholesale, dropshipping and affiliates – as well as being a direct supplier to the public.

Conclusion:

CBD is clearly not pot or weed. It is enlightening to see how much academic research and the law evolved around this topic. Make sure that you buy from a reputable source. Ask your Doctor before you start taking CBD, especially if it will be used to treat any particular illness.
