The importance of sunglasses
Some might suggest that this first suggestion mainly depends on where you live, but we will disagree. It only takes a touch of UV exposure to increase the chance of getting cataracts and macular degeneration.
We’re by no means suggesting that you should walk celebrity-like down a cloudy street with your sunglasses, but at least be aware of the weather. You can order by 8pm to receive tomorrow for some brands so if you are in the middle of a heatwave, consider investing in a pair.
Your diet affects your eyes more than you might think
This next point might raise a few eyebrows, as the general consensus is that dietary issues don’t have any impact on eyesight whatsoever. In fact, as we grow older many of us start to completely discount the “lessons” we’re taught at a young age, such as carrots helping us to see in the dark.
As it turns out, your diet can boost your eyesight. There are some foods which scientific research suggests can reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration occurring.
While we won’t hone in on specific foods at this stage, we will state the importance of a balanced diet. It might come as a surprise, but the biggest cause of blindness in adults is type 2 diabetes. Be wary of your computer screen
This is one of those suggestions that is really difficult to implement in the modern-day world, for the simple reason that most of use computers for hours upon hours every day.
Unfortunately, staring at your screen for prolonged periods is simply asking for trouble. Studies have shown that this can prompt a whole host of problems, including eyestrain, blurred vision and trouble focusing at a distance.
We certainly can’t advocate not using a computer, but those of you that do should keep in mind some basic usage tips. You should look to keep your eyes level with the top of the monitor, make sure you rest your eyes at least every twenty minutes (by looking away for a few seconds), and ensure that your glasses are compatible with long-standing computer use.
