Six Natural Foods That Give You An Energy Boost

on

Feeling tired and sluggish? What do you reach for? A venti double shot mocha latte? What about a candy bar? A soda pop? An energy shot? Many people depend on these sources of caffeine and sugar to provide them with “energy” that they need to simply get through their day. However, while a double shot mocha sounds delicious and surely will give you a jolt of energy, it won’t last long. Typically, a strong mixture of caffeine and sugar will give you a “high” and then after a few hours, send you down into the slumps again.

You will mistakenly think you need…another latte and candy bar, right? This downward spiral is not only unhealthy, but too much caffeine and sugar can prove to be dangerous to your body. There are better options, including all-natural energy boosters and also certain natural foods that contain vitamins and minerals to give you the energy you need. The next time you feel tired, instead of reaching for a Mountain Dew, try one of these all-natural energy-producing foods.

1. Bananas

Bananas contain nice amounts of vitamin B-6 which help produce energy. In addition, bananas contain a mixture of carbohydrates and fiber which will give you the steady energy you need. Don’t like the taste of bananas? Perhaps mix one in a smoothie to disguise the taste or add peanut butter for a sweeter treat.

2. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt contains a mixture of protein and carbohydrates, both of which your body needs for energy. In addition, Greek yogurt has an excellent source of magnesium, another nutrient that helps boost energy levels. When looking for Greek yogurt, look for lower sugar types. You don’t need the extra sugar and it doesn’t help with energy levels.

3. Almonds

How do these little nuts provide energy? It’s the omega 3s and omega 6s that enhance your energy. They also are a great snack to ease hunger in between meals and of course, you don’t need many.

4. Whole Grains

Whole grains can get a bad rep sometimes, but the truth is your body depends on carbohydrates for energy. Whole grains (in moderation, of course) are an excellent source of complex carbs that your body can for energy. Some excellent choices are oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, quinoa, and brown rice.

5. Leafy Green Vegetables

I’m talking broccoli, kale, spinach, and collard greens here. All of these leafy greens provide sources of iron, vitamins, and minerals. Don’t like them? Find ways that you do, or at least tolerate them. The health benefits are enormous, but you will find that your energy levels soar when you consume these types of vegetables daily.

6. Eggs

Eggs are packed with protein, which keeps you fuller longer and keeps you going! Have you noticed that when you eat a few eggs for breakfast, you are not hungry until lunchtime? (Or okay, maybe an hour or so before lunchtime) However, contrast that with eating a donut for breakfast. When are you usually hungry after that? Usually just an hour later, right? The power of eggs is in the protein, the healthy fats, and the amino acids. Eating one or two a day will give you the energy you need…naturally.

So, there you have it. Six natural foods that give you energy. You do not need the sugar-laden sweets that you think you need. Next time you feel crabby or tired, reach for one of these foods and see what happens. You will probably be surprised.
