I can count the number of people I know who actually like going to the gym on one hand. Yet I know loads more people who actually go; so if you don’t like the gym why do you go? Is it because you’re unimaginative and can’t think of any other way to get fit? Well I’m here to tell you that there is another way! You can get healthy whilst avoiding the gym.
Go for a Run
You don’t need a fancy treadmill to run. I can’t understand why people choose to go to busy, hot and smelly gyms to run for an hour on what is essentially a conveyor belt. I especially can’t understand it when the alternative is so much nicer; call me old fashioned but when I run l like to be outdoors. When you’re exercising outside you feel so much healthier there are few things as good for you as fresh air.
If you’re still not convinced let me put it like this; you wouldn’t pay however much a month to go to a gym to walk for an hour would you? Why wouldn’t you? Maybe because you can walk outside for free? Well then you can run outside for free too, it doesn’t require any special equipment.
There are all kinds of ways to compensate for not going to the gym. At the end of the day all you’re doing in the gym is lifting heavy items repeatedly. I’m sure that in your house you have plenty of heavy things that you could lift. If you just wanted a bit of moderate exercise and aren’t looking to gain loads of muscle mass then just general DIY can be great; try helping out in the garden or lifting and carry things around the house.
Sure you may have to be a bit creative but that’s all part of the fun and if the worst comes to the worst you could always go out and buy a few weights which will set you back a month’s worth of a gym membership. Another idea that has just popped into my mind is taking up a sport; just head down to your local park with some friends and you’ll be surprised how much fun a simple game of football is and how many calories it burns.
Watch What you Eat
Whether you’re going to the gym or not it is absolutely crucial that you eat the right food. Any amount of exercise will not give you the results you want if your diet is filled with junk food and alcohol. So many people I know do a form of exercise and then go straight to McDonalds or to a bar. That is incredibly counter-productive. So although isn’t technically something that you have to do to get healthy whilst avoiding the gym because you should be eating properly all the time it is important to remember.
