To get rid of whiteheads you need to practice a combination of good prevention and good action when one does appear. Prevention involves a steady, consistent system of skin care that includes the following:

  • Cleanse thoroughly – Build into your day time to cleanse your skin thoroughly both in the morning and in the evening. Gently clean your face using small, circular motions to get rid of the dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells. Don’t scrub or rub your skin; this only makes it irritated and can actually cause more whiteheads to develop.
  • Apply medication – Use an anti-acne medication on your face; there are topical creams, gels, liquids, and medicated pads, just to name a few options. Look for a medication that includes either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid among its ingredients.
  • Apply moisturizer – Choose an oil-free moisturizer that is very light and won’t clog your pores. Use it lightly, applying just enough to moisturize your skin and keep it healthy.

Okay, that takes care of prevention. That’s terrific, you might be thinking, but you have one or more whiteheads that are causing you a problem right now. What you really need to know is how to get rid of whiteheads immediately.

The immediate treatment for removing whiteheads can vary, depending on what you find works best for your skin. A few suggestions include the following:

  • Steam and clean – Use steam as a tool to help loosen up the gunk inside whiteheads just before cleansing your face. Boil water and then remove the pan from the heat; cover your head with a towel, allowing the steam to penetrate your face. After five to ten minutes of steaming, cleanse your skin using your regular facial cleaner.
  • Use a topical cream – Apply a topical anti-acne cream directly to the whitehead, choosing one that contains a high concentration of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Dab it on lightly, being careful not to poke, prod, or otherwise squeeze the whitehead forcefully.
  • Use a medicated concealer – There are lots of different concealers available that contain anti-acne medication. Use one of these products to cover up the whitehead, taking care to dab it on gently and blend lightly into your skin.

There are some newer products on the market that may help you get rid of whiteheads in some cases. They are called pore strips and they are specially made to be applied on wet skin, left on for five to ten minutes, and then pulled away to remove whiteheads and other pore clogging material. Some people have good success with these strips, but they can be quite expensive if you find you need to use them frequently.
