The main skin pigmentation issues and how to deal with them

A lot of people are dealing with skin issues these days and they are concerned about dealing with them the proper way. Pigmentation problems come from various causes, and there are also various ways to treat them, that’s why it’s important to inform yourself about the factors that cause these issues and the best manner to control them.

Why do pigmentation issues occur?

Usually, pigmentation issues develop due to melanin imbalances. The color of our skin is made from color forming cells or melanin. People have different skin colors because of the fact that they have different amounts of melanin in their bodies. The melanin is made within small membrane-bound packages that are called melanosomes.

Differences in skin color can also develop due to differences in distribution and size of melanosomes from the skin. Melanin comes in two types: eumelanin (accounting for black and brown color) and pheomelanin (accounting for red and yellow color). The first one can be found in hair, skin, areola and the hair colors black, grey, brown and blonde. The second type, pheomelanin is found in red hair color, nipples, the lips, and genital organs.

The most frequent pigmentary problems

Some of the most common pigmentary issues include melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which develop when the melanin is overproduced.

Melasma can usually develop in case of pregnancy, hormone treatments, sun exposure, medication, and hypothyroidism. There are more types of melisma such as epidermal, dermal and mixed. You can treat melisma using hydroquinone twice a day for three months. You can also successfully use kojic, tretinoin cream and sunblock.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can develop due to inflammation of the skin such as acne, psoriasis, eczema and various trauma. The treatment for hyperpigmentation is total sunblock, kojic acid, hydroquinone, peels, dermamelan and glycolic acid. Dermamelan is a professional treatment for hyperpigmentation and it is used mainly by professional experts such as dentists and dermatologists and by nurses as well. The treatment involving dermamelan blocks the overproduction of the enzyme that produces melanin, and it is able to reduce melisma production and hyperpigmentation issues.

Vitiligo is another common pigmentation issue, and it involves complete loss of pigment from a portion of the skin. This health condition affects all races in different ways. You can be born with vitiligo, and you can also develop it over the first three decades of your life. The health condition manifests itself especially on the feet, hands, genitalia and the periocular and perioral areas of the face. Vitiligo’s etiology is due to autoimmunity, and its treatment involves slow mobility of the melanocytes with the help of topical immunosuppressant creams and ointments. Another effective treatment for vitiligo is phototherapy. Treating this health condition can last over a year; therefore, it’s essential that patients are totally committed to their treatment. Other ways of treating vitiligo include Elidel cream, creams with vitamin D, topical steroid creams, PUVA treatments and more.
