When you have a cold, you probably assume some medicine and chicken noodle soup is the way to go. Those methods certainly help, but there are plenty of other ways to combat pesky viruses. The next time you feel a little under the weather, try some of these cold remedies that are more outside of the box.
1. Eat Chili Peppers
Children may not be a fan of peppers, but if you are an adult, then you can reap the benefits. Hot chili peppers possess a useful substance in them known as capsaicin. This is what makes them so spicy. It also acts as a natural decongestant. You can eat the peppers on their own or incorporate them into a curry dish. Either way, it is a great way to not feel so stuffed up.
2. Wear Wet Socks
This may sound unappealing, but it has been known to help. People should warm their feet in hot water initially. As they are doing that, they should soak a pair of socks in cold water. Thick wool socks work best. You should then put the cold socks on your warm feet and go to bed. The idea is that the constriction of blood vessels pushes beneficial nutrients into your vital organs to help fight off the infection.
You may not feel like doing a heavy workout when you are sick, but moderate exercise has great anti-inflammatory effects. Go at a slow pace to boost your body temperate. Other ways to increase your body’s temperature is to drink some tea. Yarrow and peppermint teas are two good ones.
4. Listen to Jazz
As odd as it may sound, listening to jazz is one of the best remedies for a cold. The reason for this is that jazz increases your body’s natural production of Immunoglobulin A. This is a protein that helps fight off infections. It primarily resides in the throat, mouth and nose. Some other genres of music that produce a similar effect include soft rock, choral music, and bluegrass.
5. Eat Chocolate
Before you get too excited, you are not going to benefit by eating plain milk chocolate. It should ideally be hot, dark chocolate. If you want, you can even sweeten it with a little bit of honey. Dark chocolate is an excellent source of theobromine, which suppresses your body’s tendency to cough when you are sick. Keep in mind that sugar overall will weaken your immune system.
6. Eat Onions
When nothing else works, you can try eating a raw onion. However, if that does not sound appetizing, then you should try incorporating raw onion into a soup. Onions are naturally antimicrobial, and they boost the body’s immune response. They are a great way to detox.
When you have a cold, you can find some relief in a few different home remedies. The effectiveness of any of these will vary from one person to the next, so try them all out to see what works best for you. If nothing else, some rest and cold medicine should help a lot.
