What are the Side Effects of Cold Laser Treatment?

Published

on

One of the advantages of cold laser treatment is that it has no unsafe side effects. This is because the FDA-approved therapy employs the use of light waves without heat to achieve therapeutic results, deeming it a noninvasive treatment. However, low-level laser therapy can have some drawbacks that should be noted.

Producing desired body sculpting results in targeted areas of the body is not always a given, and it is not an answer for the severely overweight. Some of those who do receive treatment will not obtain their desired results, and some will lose more total inches than others. For those who seek treatment for pain relief or to promote healing, results will also vary.

Length and coverage of treatment

Laser fat removal has the disadvantage of not providing complete relief after a single surgery. Patients should also be aware that they will need to visit the doctor for approximately hour-long treatments repeatedly, sometimes up to 3 or 4 times per week for a month or more.

If your condition is more serious, then a lengthier period may be required of up to 30 sessions. Patients must also be willing to exercise regularly and eat healthy to maintain long-term results, or the laser effects could be reversed. Also, be aware that Medicare, Medicaid, and many other health insurance providers do not cover the cost of this treatment. The positive side is that there are no medical or medication costs involved.

Precautions

Cold laser treatment requires care when it comes to protecting the eyes. Procedures need to be carried out with the proper safety glasses worn by both the practitioner and the patient to prevent possible damage. It is also crucial that no treatment takes place in natural areas with any suspected cancer cells or tumors present. Pregnant women should not use this treatment. It has been noted that there can be no treatment over the fontanelle of infants or the thyroid region. Also, any patient who is using immunosuppressant or photo-sensitive drugs should not undergo surgery.

Previous injuries of targeted spots may tend to become aggravated from the effects of the therapy, but this will usually be minimized within a few days. Those with pacemakers are not candidates for low-level laser therapy. While studies are still being conducted to clarify whether cold laser treatment is safe for people with certain medical conditions, it is best to prevent any negative consequences in the meantime by excluding questionable patients.

Overuse

Body sculpting with a cold laser is becoming more and more popular, with some lasers delivering high output power. It has recently come to light that it is possible to overdose from the treatment. However, it has been determined that overuse results in a decreased healing rate for the patient.

As a result, optimization of laser power and treatment length is undergoing ongoing research to ascertain the best patient intervention techniques. With multiple treatments to one area with the same laser dosage, findings have shown it may be ineffective for some patients. It is not clear whether this is due to the unresponsiveness of the particular patient or the provider delivering an ineffective treatment dosage. With cold laser treatment becoming more commonplace, professionals and patients will further their understanding of how the therapy works best and the range of conditions it can ultimately help treat.
