Belly up to the bar: public puffing guidelines for vapers

Vaping can be a great alternative to smoking real tobacco: not only is it better for you, there are places you can still indulge in the habit where traditional smoking has been banned. If you are going to vape in public, however, there are a few guidelines you should follow.

Using an electronic cigarette as opposed to a traditional one doesn’t give you carte blanche to take a pull whenever and where you’d like to. There are still some rules that should guide all courteous vapers — and those who want to avoid fines. Here are a few things to think about if you are unsure whether you can vape in certain places or not.

Bars and Pubs

Traditionally, bars and pubs have been the last places to ban smoking tobacco, and they may only do so when they are forced by city or state laws. This means that if you are in a bar or pub that allows traditional smoking, you can be sure that they allow vaping as well.

But what if they don’t allow smoking? Allowing people to vape in the establishment then becomes acceptable only at the wishes of the owners or managers. If you don’t see anyone smoking, you should ask a bartender or other employee if vaping is allowed.

In higher-end bars, you may be told that they don’t allow vaping, but a lot of middle-of-the-road bars don’t have any objection as long as you are courteous about it and don’t use flavorings that are too strong.

Restaurants

Restaurants are similar to bars and pubs, but restaurants will traditionally enforce non-smoking seating or outright bans more so than other places because smoke interferes with people’s enjoyment of food. Again, if you are in a smoking section, you can vape with the confidence that you are allowed to do so.

If a restaurant is non-smoking, they may still allow you to vape, but they also may be just as likely to say no, or ask you to do so outside. Heed their wishes and vape according to their rules. A lot of people don’t like the smell of an electronic cigarette any more than a real one.

Public Places Vaping is Never Acceptable

There are places where you should never try to vape. These include public transportation — buses, trains, etc. — federal buildings, movie theaters, and airplanes. Places like these have enforced a strict non-smoking policy for years and it extends to electronic cigarettes. This is because these places are very public and they want to avoid the chances of a fire starting.

Above all else, you can always ask if vaping is acceptable. Being courteous to those around you is a great way to ensure your future enjoyment of vaping. Being obnoxious about your habit will not help anybody.

While vaping can be a good alternative to smoking, you should always make sure you are vaping in a courteous way.
