7 Essential Oils for Treating Your Acne-Prone Skin

in Overall Health by

Does that patch of acne on your face worry you? Well, you’re not alone. Most people develop acne around their face, shoulders, chest, neck, or back. Natural oil, called sebum, is produced by your skin to prevent it from drying out. But due to various factors, like age and food habits, this natural oil tends to secrete in excess.

However, this excess oil leads to accumulation of dirt and dead skin cells. It blocks the hair follicles and forms small bumps or pimples. If left unattended, acne will turn your skin darker and give rise to blackheads.

Acne can make you feel less attractive or cause severe emotional discomfort. It’s important to have it treated before it blemishes your skin. Using home remedies like natural oils to treat your acne can save you time and money.  The results can leave you astonished leaving you with healthier and more attractive skin. Some essential oils used for treating acne are listed below.

  1. Tea Tree oil

Tea Tree oil is highly antibacterial and antifungal. It reduces skin inflammation that causes sebum and bacteria to accumulate under the skin. This, in turn, leads to swelling and formation of acne.

Take a small ball of cotton wool and pour a few drops of tea tree oil on it. Gently wipe your acne with this cotton ball for 7-10 minutes. People with extremely sensitive skin can dilute it with other carrier oils, like olive oil or coconut oil. You can use 1 drop of carrier oil for every 3 drops of tea tree oil. This is highly effective against acne, but it dries your skin. It’s recommended that you use a moisturizer after every treatment.

  1. Rosemary oil

Rosemary oil is a good choice for treating acne; it helps in preventing excess oil secretion. Its anti-inflammatory properties will reduce blemishes and redness of the skin. Dilute 10 drops of rosemary oil with 2-3 drops of olive oil. Dip a small cotton ball in this mixture and dab it gently on your blemishes.

Regular use of rosemary oil will greatly reduce acne and helps fade out the redness. Using a moisturizer containing rosemary extract can give better results.

  1. Lavender oil

Lavender oil soothes skin irritation and helps remove excess oil. You can choose a moisturizer that contains lavender, or create your own moisturizer by mixing jojoba or almond oil with lavender oil. You can apply the oil gently over the acne-prone areas. Use this twice a day for the best results. It’s one of the top essential oils for acne.

  1. Bergamot oil
