Despite having over 100,000 medical articles done on it, glutathione (GSH) is still a relatively unknown antioxidant. This comes as an even bigger surprise because it is regarded as the body’s Master Antioxidant and it is considered one of the best single indicators of overall body toxicity levels.
Benefits of Glutathione
Found in every living cell on the planet, glutathione is vital for both health and life. Responsible for detoxifying our cells, GSH acts as a magnet for toxins and heavy metals. Gathering up these harmful substances and ushering them out of the body, resulting in improved cellular function. The most well documented benefits of supplementing glutathione levels are those to do with liver health. In part this is due to the reduced toxicity level, taking the onus off the liver and allowing it to repair itself.
The liver is the single most important organ when it comes to keeping us healthy, constantly detoxifying our blood and cleansing our body of any potentially harmful infectious agents. By supporting liver health you are really supporting total body health, including cognitive health and immune function.
Now that we have covered why glutathione is so vital for our health and well-being, it is important to understand how to best increase your GSH levels.
Foods vs Supplements
There are certain foods that can help boost the body’s natural glutathione production, these include cruciferous vegetables, avocado’s and asparagus among others. However it is very difficult to significantly raise glutathione levels through food alone, the necessary nutrients are simply not found in sufficient amounts. This makes supplementing with a high quality dietary supplement very important.
Many whole food believers might disagree with the necessity of a dietary supplement to acquire the desired nutritional intake each day. A hundred years ago they would have been correct, we would be getting all the nutrition we need from the foods we grew and raised. Today that is just not the case though, with an overwhelming amount of toxins bombarding our body each day, we need help coping. From pollution in the air, toxins found in our water and food, poor diet, exposure to radiation and pharmaceutical drugs, our body needs help. This is why I am a strong believer in dietary supplements to help achieve the optimal nutritional intake. The market is saturated with low quality supplements with outrageous claims, making it more important than ever to read the labels and do your homework before buying.
Choosing the Right Glutathione Supplement
Not all glutathione supplements are made equal, and high quality glutathione complexes are extremely rare presently. A quality glutathione complex is so important because in order to effectively raise GSH levels and sustain them, you need to target it on three different levels. Directly with L-glutathione, acetyl glutathione or liposomal glutathione, increasing the body’s natural production with precursors like N-acetylcysteine and alpha lipoic acid, as well as support GSH recycling through the methylation pathways. In order to do this effectively it can get quite expensive, this is why there are so few proper glutathione complexes available. The good news is, as glutathione gets more attention and time in the media spotlight, more and more supplement manufacturers are taking it upon themselves to formulate high quality glutathione enhancing supplements.
