What To Do If You’re Being Attacked By A Dog

on

While most dogs are lovable and cuddly creatures, there are some dogs out there that have been trained to fight or have vicious behaviors. And if these dogs were to see you as a threat, it may put them into attack mode.

Dogs also have vicious bites, and one strong bite near a major artery could result in serious injury or even death. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re being attacked by a dog, you need to do everything you possibly can to avoid being seriously injured. The following are tips to help you learn what to do if you’re ever being attacked by a dog.

Never approach a vicious dog.

If a dog is constantly barking, growling, or jumping toward you, you want to stay away from it. You may want to go up and show the dog that you’re not threatening, but this could put you in serious danger. If you see a dog that is vicious, leave it alone.

Take precautions.

There are certain things you should do to keep yourself from being attacked. First, you should never smile at a vicious dog. While you think you’re being friendly, the dog mistakes your teeth for a growl, which can put them into attack mode. Second, you should avoid making eye contact with the dog. If you don’t pay attention to it, it may become bored with you and decide you’re not worth its time. Finally, you will also want to stay calm. Dogs can sense the fear in you, and they’ll use this to attack you.

Never run.

Running away from a vicious dog is the worst idea. In most cases, the dog will be faster than you, which means it’s going to catch you eventually. Plus, dogs see the running as a sign of a fight, so they will use this as a gesture that you want to be attacked.

Get down.

If a dog is physically attacking you, you need to get into a position that will protect you the most. Get down on the ground in the fetal position, keeping your head tucked under your arms. You will also want to make sure that you clench your hands into a fist position so that your fingers are out of harm’s way. Staying in this position can help protect your major arteries from being bitten by the dog, and if the dog eventually realizes that you’re not fighting back, they may just walk away.

Fight back.

Depending on the situation, you may be able to fend off the vicious dog by fighting back. Never fight back using your own limbs as weapons. Instead, find a long strong stick that you can use to fight the dog off. If you hear a hose or fire hydrant, spraying the dog with the hose or fire hydrant can also fend them off and get them to leave you alone. If you don’t have access to a stick or hose quickly, it’s better to just get down in the fetal position to protect yourself.
