If you spend an extended period of time in front of the computer, you might have experienced some form of headache, eye strain, or any other stresses related to your vision. If you do, know that you are not alone. In fact, 8 out of 10 computer users report some sort of eye strain when they use the computer. This has become such a prevalent problem that it has been given the name Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
While refraining from using your computer might not be feasible for many, there are some things that you can do to lessen the strain that you experience from it. Knowing about visual ergonomics can greatly help in alleviating the symptoms of CVS. Take note of these 5 keys to save your eyesight.
1.Fit your set up to you
Position your computer in a way that you can look beyond its screen. Sit directly in front of your computer screen so that you are directly facing it and that your line of sight is higher or in the same level as the top of your screen. Keep a distance of 18 to 24 inches between you and the computer screen.
2.Constantly look away from the screen
From time to time, look away from your screen and focus your eyesight on an object that is far away to exercise your eyes. Shift your focus from far to near 3 to 4 times. This is so much better than getting hourly break as this will give the rest and relief that your eyes will need. Staring at your computer screen for a long time can cause tension, fatigue, and other eye problems.
3. Minimize screen glare
There are so many ways for you to minimize the glare in your screen. Experiment on them to find those to find the one that is most comfortable for you. Some of these include moving the screen to another location, covering windows to block sunlight, and lowering or turning off lights. It might be impossible to totally eliminate glare but you can always fit your computer with an anti-glare screen.
4. Use friendly lighting
Dimmer lights are a better choice than bright fluorescent lights. You can have a desk lamp for close tasks but you have to make sure that it does not reflect on the screen. Most of the time, the problem is the quantity of light in your workspace. It would help if you turn off fluorescent lights and use 100-watt bulbs instead.
5. Blink more often
Because of air conditioning, computer rooms tend to be very dry environments. This is one of the main reasons that could hurt your eyes. To combat dry eyes that results to this, you need to lubricate your eyes by blinking. The problem is that we tend to blink less when working in front of the computer. Drink more water for hydration. You may also use natural eye drops.
These five tips might help maintain the health of your eyes but they are not enough. Make sure that you also regularly consult your doctor at least once in a year for proper eye evaluation and prescription, should you need it.
