Good health can save you money in a lot of ways, from not having to take medications in order to live longer, to having the energy to do all that you want to do. You may also find that you can potentially get a much better rate on your life insurance cost if your health is good.

But let’s suppose that you have health issues which are putting you in a high risk life insurance category. That means that you may have to pay a lot more for life insurance than people you know of the same age who have better health than you. You may think that you will be stuck paying this sort of money for the rest of your life. But the fact is that if you take care of your health, and improve things, you may actually be able to get a better deal on your life insurance in the near future.

Here are some things you can do to improve your health:

Quit smoking

This is the single biggest thing you can do today to improve your health. Within 10 minutes of you smoking your last cigarette, your health will begin to improve and heal. And the longer you are able to be smoke-free, the better your health will be. In addition, if you can stay tobacco-free for two years, you can see your life insurance rates go down – and your lifespan will go up. Your risks of contracting cancer, lung disease, throat cancer, and heart disease will decrease. And you will feel a lot better – and smell better, too.

Lose weight

The second best thing you can do if you want to improve your health is to lose weight if you are overweight or obese. That extra weight can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other complications to your health. Even losing 10 percent of your body weight can potentially improve your health.  So after talking to your physician, get started on a weight loss program. You can see your overall health get much better, and that can potentially mean lower life insurance rates.

Exercise

A great way to lose weight, as well as improve overall health, is to get regular exercise. Talk with your physician about an exercise plan that is right for you. You can start out slow by taking a 20 to 30 minute walk three to four times a week, and build up your stamina from there.
