It’s horrible when you can’t get to sleep at night. Maybe you’ve been tossing and turning for a few nights and you’re hoping everything will go back to normal soon, but it might not. You might end up with a bad case of insomnia that won’t just disappear on its own. You’re better trying to get back into a normal sleeping pattern as soon as possible and we’re going to look at a few ways you can do it.

Watch what you drink

7 Helpful Ways To Deal With A Mild Case Of Insomnia

If you want to close your eyes and drift off to sleep when you go to bed you should make sure you don’t drink much coffee or alcohol. Stop drinking coffee in the middle of the afternoon and you will have to keep the stronger stuff for special occasions. Before you go to bed you should actually drink some herbal tea and it will help you to relax a little.

Leave your bedroom alone

People complain about finding it hard to get to sleep, but when you probe a little deeper you realize they spend a lot of time in their bedroom during the day. Don’t sit on your bed to watch TV and don’t lie down under the covers with your laptop rested on your knees. Your bedroom should only be used for sleeping in otherwise you will teach yourself to stay awake when you’re on your bed.

Don’t take any naps

It’s great taking naps during the afternoon because you will feel a lot fresher when you wake up, but you have to cancel them out as soon as you start to find it difficult to get to sleep at night. You will end up messing up your sleep schedule because you will lie awake all night. From now on you should do your best to stay awake until late at night when you are ready for bed.

Get up and do something

As soon as you realize you can’t get to sleep you should get up and do something. If you take your own lunch to work you should get up and prepare it. If you have a book you need to finish you should go downstairs and read for a while. Just don’t lie in your bed pretending you will get to sleep in 5 minutes. Go and have a break then start trying to fall asleep again.

Move more during the day

If you move more during the day you will use up a lot more energy. When you have less energy you will be much more likely to switch off as soon as your head hits the pillow. At the very least you will definitely get to sleep quicker. If you don’t go to the gym you should think about getting a membership, at least until you get back into the habit of falling asleep quickly.

Learn to relax your mind

When you lie down in bed it’s hard to get to sleep when your mind is going around in circles. It’s impossible to shut off your inner-voice so you get a chance to pass into the dream world. You need to learn how to relax your mind and that could mean one of a few things, but meditation and yoga are two choices you definitely won’t regret.

Avoid stressful situations

You won’t need to practice yoga or meditation if you don’t get so stressed in the first place. Sometimes it’s easy to get rid of any stress in your life because you just need to shut it out. It’s obviously going to be impossible to quit your job if that is the reason you are kept awake at night, but most other stressful situations can be avoided.
