Are you going to have a breast augmentation surgery soon? You may have already discussed the basics with your doctor, but preparing yourself for the procedure thoroughly can ensure that the procedure is done safely and you make a swift recovery afterward.

Here are some steps and tips you can take for this.

Step 1- Avoid the certain medicines

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, need to be avoided for at least a week before your scheduled surgery. This group of medicines includes aspirin, and it can cause problems during the surgery. You also need to stop taking Vitamin E and other particular herbal supplements that are known to increase the risk of bleeding. Your surgeon will be able to fill the details of what medicines you can take and what you should avoid and when you should avoid them.

Moreover, you should tell your surgeon about all the medicines you are taking or have been taking in the last couple of weeks before the surgery. If your surgeon has prescribed medicines to be taken before and after the breast augmentation procedure, make sure that the prescription has been filled and the medicines are kept at a convenient location. You may not be able to move around too much after the surgery, so it helps to have your medicines in hand instead of running around to fill the prescription later on.

Step 2- Keep away from alcohol, smoking, etc.

Alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding during surgery and smoking can delay the healing process after the procedure and also trigger other effects on your overall health. You should avoid alcohol at least two weeks before the surgery and cigarettes three weeks before and after the surgery. In fact, you could use this procedure to kick your habit for good, so ask your surgeon about smoking cessation, and prepare for it.

You may also have to avoid smoking cessation aids like nicotine patches and chewing gum for some time before and after the surgery because they can also cause healing problems. So, talk to your surgeon about alternatives.

Marijuana should also be avoided since it magnifies the effect of the anesthesia you would be given during the surgery, thereby increasing the risk of certain serious side effects due to an anesthesia overdose.

Step 3- Ask your surgeon for detailed pre-operative instructions

In order to prepare for the breast augmentation procedure, your surgeon will give you a number of instructions that include some health tests. The tests required may vary with each patient, but they generally include a CBC or Complete Blood Count, which measures the number of platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells in your blood. This test lets the doctor know if you have an infection, indicated by a high WBC count, anemia, indicated by low iron levels, or blood clotting problems.

You may be asked to check your blood sugar levels, and you will need to fast for some time to take these tests. Other common tests required to be done before the surgery include breast X-Rays and mammograms, as well as a full physical exam.
