Hair Transplant – What and How About This Common Medical Procedure

Baldness at times can change the overall personality and outlook of an individual. Therefore, if the desire is to undo any potential negative damage caused by it then one will have to explore options of a hair transplant surgery. A surgical technique moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body, which is referred to as the donor’s site to another part known as the recipient’s site.

This surgical process is mainly intended to cure male pattern baldness. However, it can also be used to eyelashes, eyebrows, or even beard hair. The time taken in the process can be anywhere in the range of four to six hours and is done after placing the patient in anesthesia.

Since the patient is placed under anesthesia, there is no pain involved in the process. However, it is also a fact that at the end of the day, it is a surgical process and there are bound to be surgical incursions. Therefore, the idea is to make sure that one is healthy enough to take the pains and stress associated with a surgical incursion. Therefore, before taking the plunge one must consult medical professionals. However, there are several modern-day techniques aimed at making the process less complicated. Primarily amongst the two is strip harvesting and follicular unit extraction.

Out of the two strips, the harvesting process is the most common technique.  At times a single, double, or a triple-bladed scalpel is used to remove strips of hair-bearing tissue of hair from the donor site. However, here there is a need to be careful and each incision must be planned in such a way so that only intact hair is removed. On removal, the strip is dissected into follicular which are small, naturally formed groupings of hair follicles. Now the other type, which is the follicular unit extraction, may take place in a single session or in multiple sessions.

It is known to be more time consuming than the strip harvesting process. However, the advantage is that in this process there is a total absence of a linear scar. The procedure has negligible or very little pain or postoperative discomfort.  However, more than the surgery one must choose the hair transplant clinic with great care.  Since it is a surgical process one must make sure that the surrounding is clean and of course; experienced surgeons are in charge of affairs. They will make sure that the process is conducted in a smooth manner.

Now once the surgery is over it is now time to concentrate on the postoperative part of the process. If there any advances for any wound care it would allow for semi-permeable dressing, which allows seepage of blood and tissue fluid to be applied or changed at least once daily. There is also the need to protect the vulnerable area from the sun.

One can use the shampoo in that area but after a period of two days. In fact, shampoo is an important instrument to prevent scabs from occurring around the hair shaft.  Scabs are mainly responsible for the loss of hair for the first two days. There are some side effects of this surgical process and hair thinning also referred to as shock loss is a prime example.  However, it is a temporary occurrence and things should be fine soon.

Therefore, taking into consideration the delicate nature of the surgical process one must go for experience while opting for a clinic.
