We have been hearing time and time again that smoking is injurious to health, and can lead to many health complications which may eventually cause death. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every five deaths in the US is caused due to smoking complications. Smoking leads to cardiovascular complications, respiratory problems, cancer, premature delivery and infertility. The main ingredient of cigarette, tobacco and other additives are extremely harmful for the body and are the major cause for complications.
Apart from the above mentioned health risks, smoking also leads to many different kinds of cancers such as the following.
One of the deadliest effects of smoking is the development of lung cancer. According to researchers, cigarette smoking is almost the only cause for small lung cancer, which is the most common type of lung cancer. The cancer is aggressive in nature and spreads rapidly to the other organs of the body. Common symptoms include wheezing, chest pain, phlegm and coughing.
Mouth, Larynx and Throat Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute, mouth, esophageal, throat and larynx cancer are all caused due to smoking. Some of the typical symptoms of these cancers include weight loss, sore throat, fatigue, breathing that sounds abnormal, open sores and tumorous growth. In many of these cancers, the symptoms do not appear until the cancer has spread significantly.
Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic cancer, a condition which is usually poorly predicted, could be developed as a result of smoking. This kind of cancer usually spreads very fast and is not diagnosed until it has progressed a lot. Common symptoms include blood clots, jaundice and upper abdominal pain.
Other Cancers Apart from these cancers, smoking is also attributed to other types of cancer such as cervical cancer, stomach cancer and bladder cancer. It is also a risk factor for other cases such as acute myelogenous leukemia, a kind of cancer for the bone and blood. All these cancers spread rather fast in the body, therefore quick treatment is necessary.
Apart from the cancer risks, smoking is also attributed to other medical conditions such as
Stroke and Heart Disease Women who smoke regularly have an increased risk of heart diseases which is a leading cause of death, and stroke. The risk is proportional to the number of cigarettes smoked; higher the number of cigarettes smoked greater is the risk for heart stroke. Studies show that the heart disease is higher in younger women, especially those who are on birth control pills.
Reproductive Health The tobacco in cigarette can severely affect a woman’s reproductive health. Those who smoke regularly have difficulty in conceiving. They are also at a risk of developing menopause early than other women and have much worst problems while going through menopause.
Pregnancy During pregnancy, smoking is attributed to cause severe problems to the mother as well as the child. One of the major problems faced is that the placenta, the responsible for nourishing the child, is too close to the opening of the uterus. Other risks include ruptured membranes, placentas separated from the uterus, heavy bleeding, C-sections, miscarriages, low birth weight, still births and premature births.
As is obvious from the above data, smoking is a bad habit that can cause severe problems in the body, especially in women. Not only does it lead to various types of cancer but also other health problems which can prove to be fatal. It is therefore advised that people avoid indulging in this habit as it may have severe future consequences.
