The Amazing BlueberryNow that winter has passed and warmer spring days are just around the corner. There is no better season than summer to find, locally grown and harvested fresh fruits and vegetables. But August is my favorite month, because locally grown blueberries are plentiful.

Blueberries are classified as a super fruit by many nutritionists and health experts because they are packed full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, including lutein. Lutein is a compound found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, and even blueberries and science has been identified as an important natural supplements to prevent and sometimes even reverse one eye condition called “macular degeneration”, one of the most common causes vision impairment or blindness in many older people, blueberries also said to have powerful weight loss benefits by helping to speed up the metabolism.

And what a wonderfully tasty way to look after your general health and eye sight! Eat them raw, try to place them in a saucepan with a little sugar, a touch of cinnamon and a few table spoons of cornstarch, gently touch and heat the entire soup until you have a thick, rich dark syrupy, now pour into a pie crust and torch, a lovely healthy blueberry pie.

Alternatively you can use your freshly made blueberry syrup to brighten up almost any desert including your morning cereal or but an extra punch in fresh green continental style salad.
Organic gourmet blueberry syrup and canned blueberries usually retain many of their healthy qualities of freshly picked blueberries raw, so there’s no need to be concerned about adding these treats to your daily diet. A tablespoon of natural blueberry preserve spread over a slice of whole grain bread or some toast can be a very healthy start to your day. A medium portion of gently warmed blueberry syrup poured over a bowl of vanilla ice cream or freshly made pancakes are a healthy lovely treat for all the family, anytime of the day.

So! Now that summer is her control take full advantage of the natural stocks that mother earth has to offer us by indulging in the locally produced products that are available at your farmer’s markets and grocery store. And do not forget to include fresh, locally harvested blueberries in your shopping cart, it is a super way to enjoy and revel in the best of summer’s culinary delights.

Blueberries are know to have one of the highest levels of antioxidants of any known plants. Others include Acai – a brazillian berry and Goji Berries from the himalayas.
