Every woman goes through a variety of problems during menstruation. Period pain is one of the leading causes of missed days at college or office by women. Some women get away with mild pain and discomfort, while others have to deal with excruciating pain that often becomes unbearable. Many women curse their womanhood due to period pain.

Severe period pain is a result of heavy blood flow experienced during menses. Period pain is nothing but pain arising out of excessive uterine muscle contractions. It occurs in the form of cramps mostly in the stomach, pelvis, lower back, hips, and calves. Other symptoms are nausea, vomiting, headache, constipation, loose motions, and breast tenderness.

Some women experience hormonal imbalances that trigger severe pain. Though painkillers are the most commonly preferred medicines for period pain, many women refrain from consuming them as they are known to damage the uterus. However, this may not always be true. Consuming mild painkillers like ibuprofen and paracetamol helps you cross the menstruation period 4-5 days with ease. Some women just can’t manage the pain on their own.

How to Tackle Period Pain?

  • Period pain stalls the life of most ladies, and they cannot carry on with their daily activities. Consume an effective painkiller like Ibuprofen for quick period pain relief.
  • Never overstuff your stomach with food while you are having periods. Having lighter meals ensures nutrition, but never eat too much to stress your system. Your body is in already greater stress than usual during menstruation.
  • Having warm baths at night before sleeping ensures you sleep well throughout the night without menstrual pain troubling you.
  • Eat foods rich in calcium and magnesium like milk, yogurt, cheese, etc. Soy foods help a lot in normalizing hormonal imbalances. Lack of calcium and magnesium increases stomach cramps.
  • Increase your intake of fibrous foods. This helps you relieve symptoms of constipation thus lessening your period pain.
  • Refrain from caffeinated drinks and foods/drinks containing high sugar and salt. These cause bloating which further deteriorates the period pain.
  • Though during period pain, all you feel like doing is going to bed and sleep, it may help you if you exercise a bit. Mild exercises help relax uterine muscles and increase blood flow to the pelvis. Exercises help reduce the hormonal levels of prostaglandins, which care responsibly for causing period pain.  Exercise releases endorphins that increase feelings of wellness and reduces pain.
  • Refrain from wearing tight clothes as they block the blood circulation to the various organs of the body increasing the pain.
  • Heating pads are highly effective for period pain relief. The heat that radiates to the areas of pain like the pelvis, stomach, and back to increase blood circulation, decrease stiffness, and relax aching muscles.
  • Sleeping offers great comfort and has the potency to relieve you of the pain of any severity.
  • Some women with extreme hormonal disturbances are recommended birth control pills. These work by reducing the severity of period pain.

Don’t focus on the pain. This makes you feel more pain. Get involved in some mild work so that time flies quickly during the days of menstruation. Shifting your focus away from menstrual pain is like not feeling it. When you don’t feel pain, it is not there. So, this works as psychological treatment.
