Increased workloads, multiple classes with daily homework, and a possible part-time job make finding time for yourself difficult. Late nights, early mornings, stress, and poor eating habits can cause a sudden decline in your health.

To maintain your health throughout college, it is important to create a lifestyle plan that makes your health a priority. This will provide a variety of healthy benefits in your life, including increased productivity, higher energy levels, fewer sicknesses, and overall wellbeing. Try some of the following tips to remain healthy throughout your college experience.

Exercise regularly

Many students allow exercise to fall by the wayside during their college years. Even if many people exercised regularly in high school, the lack of gym requirements in college combined with late nights and long hours in class leads many students into dropping their physical education. This practice is unfortunate, as exercise is just as important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle in college as it is in any other period of life. Try to make room for exercise in your schedule for at least 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time.

Get enough sleep

Many college students stay up well into the early morning hours to finish assignments on time and hang out with friends. Late nights and early mornings lead to bad sleep habits that can cause a variety of issues. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue during the day, reduced performance in school that can lead to poor grades, and a reduced immune system that can cause health problems. Try to get at least 6 hours of sleep most nights to prevent these problems from occurring.

Study daily

While it can be tempting to wait to study until the night before the test, this practice will lead to a series of late nights, which will eventually catch up to you and cause health problems. Instead, try studying and working on assignments for a short period each night. This will keep the material fresh in your mind and also prevent the need for all-nighters and late-night test cramming.

Clean up your diet

While the typical college diet is full of greasy fast-food and cafeteria fare, this is not the best choice of food to promote a healthy mind and body. Try to maintain a healthy diet during your time in college, full of plenty of vegetables and fruit, protein, hearty grains, and dairy from a variety of sources. Avoid fast food and other greasy foods.

De-stress

At the end of each day, take some time to de-stress from the events of the day. Keeping a daily schedule of when assignments are due can also cut down on a lot of college stress. Meditation, relaxing, and even a simple bath are all effective de-stressing tools.

While it is easy for the college experience to be overwhelming, applying healthy living habits will make it easier to bear. Students can make the conscious choice to live healthy lifestyles now to reap the benefits throughout their college experience. This is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy school and life balance that is important during the college years.
