The Childhood Obesity Epidemic
Childhood obesity has become a major problem in today’s society. Obese children are at an increased risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. The good news is that physically active children are less likely to be obese. Below are some things that you can do to help your children get physically active:
Set a Good Example
You are your child’s biggest role model. If your youngsters see you doing something, then naturally they will want to copy it. That is why it is important for you to set a good example by living an active lifestyle yourself. Studies have shown that if a child has active parents, then he or she is six times more likely to be active.
Limit Television and Internet Time
One of the reasons that many children today are not getting enough exercise is because they spend too much times surfing the Internet or watching television. You should limit your children’s television and Internet time to two hours per day. Studies have shown that children who spend more than two hours a day in front of the television are more likely to be obese.
Give Your Child Options
There are several ways that children can get more activity into their day. They can run around outdoors or play inside with their toys. You may also want to encourage your children to participate in sports. Additionally, if you have older children, then you may want to let them join the gym.
Exercise is supposed to be fun, and that is why children should be able to choose from a variety of activities. It will be much easier for your children to exercise on a regular basis if they have activities that they enjoy. As long as your children are active for 60 minutes a day, five days out of the week, they will reap huge benefits.
Make Exercise a Family Affair
You should exercise with your children. This will not only make it easier for your kids to exercise, but it will also allow you to spend more time with them. You all can go for a family walk or bike ride together. You all can also go hiking. Additionally, you and your children can put on some records and dance together.
