Winter Skincare Routines

Winter Skincare RoutinesThe colder months of the year can be particularly harsh on your skin. Winter weather can result in dry skin, breakouts, and discomfort, as well as problems with your hair and fingernails. In this way, it’s important to start and maintain a winter skincare regime that will keep your skin hydrated, and that will help to protect yourself against the cold and the rain. Some of these routines include focusing on the following areas.

The most important area to focus on when developing a winter skincare regime is moisturisation. You need to keep your skin as hydrated as possible, as dry skin is more likely to experience blemishes, cracks, and long term wrinkles. Apply moisturiser every day as part of your normal regime, and make sure that you exfoliate a few times a week to get rid of dead skin. The more natural the moisturiser, the better, with chemical and synthetic products often damaging your skin. Natural body scrubs and antibacterial and moisturising shampoos are also recommended as a way of keeping your skin in its best possible condition during the Winter.

Moreover, it’s crucial to focus on sensitive areas of your body like hands and lips, which can be particularly vulnerable to the weather. Use a lip balm, and look into finding lipsticks that offer resistance to the cold. You should also try to wear gloves when out on a cold day, or apply plenty of moisturiser to keep your skin protected. If you are having particular issues with your hands, it’s worth investing in dry skin treatments that can soothe cracks and bruises. Also, be careful about using too much makeup on areas that have become irritated, as this can make problems worse.

Lifestyle changes during the Winter are also necessary to help your skin to avoid problems. Try to wash your hair the night before work to avoid over drying in the morning, and avoid taking baths and showers that are too long and hot, as this can rob your skin of essential oils. Similarly, avoid smoking and drinking to excess, as this can dry out your skin. When bathing, use essential oils to keep your skin hydrated. In terms of diet, focus on foods like fish that contain omega fatty acids and protein, and avoid junk food that can lead to break outs and greasy skin. If possible, try to get plenty of exercise during the Winter, as better blood circulation will improve the appearance of skin.

When exercising, or even just when outside, ensure that you’re wearing the right clothing and layers. Cotton and silk are best against skin, while comfortable wool can be worn through jackets and jumpers to keep yourself warm. Work uniforms made from breathable fabrics are also useful if you want to stop yourself from perspiring under different layers. Moreover, it’s worth remembering to check with your doctor if you are having any persistent skincare problems, or if you’re having an allergic reaction to any treatments you may be using to beat the cold.
