Five Safety Tips for JoggersJogging is a great way to lose weight and improve your overall health, but along with all the benefits also come risks. Those who don’t adequately prepare themselves to jog or who don’t take the right safety precautions while jogging could end up suffering from a very serious injury. If you’re a jogger, make sure to check out and stick to the following five safety tips.

1. Stick to familiar areas.

It’s very important that you jog in an area that you’re familiar with. This way, you will not run the risk of getting lost while jogging, taking you completely out of your way. Plus, you will feel safer when you jog in an area you know. This way, you will know where to find the nearest public place if you feel like you are being followed, and you can easily get yourself into safety.

2. Wear bright clothing.

When you’re jogging, it’s very important to wear very bright clothing, no matter what time of day. Too many joggers are hit by cars every year because the driver didn’t see them. This is why you need to always wear bright and reflective clothing when possible, especially at night. This will help other cars and even other people see you.

3. Carry an alarm.

While you don’t want to pack yourself full of unnecessary gear, carrying a whistle or personal alarm is a great way to keep yourself safe. If you ever feel like your safety is compromised, or if you are ever attacked while jogging, you can blow in the whistle or sound the alarm. This will catch the attention of anyone who may be nearby, and it could just be enough to scare off your attacker. To be safe, you want to make sure that you keep the whistle or the alarm in your hand or near your hand at all times. This way, if you are attacked, you will not need to spend a significant amount of time trying to find it.

4. Stay out of the woods.

While a running path may take you through a wooded park, it’s always a good idea to avoid these areas, especially at night and especially when you’re alone. Instead, always opt to run in public places that are well lit. Not only will this keep you safe and out of harm’s way, but it will also ensure that drivers can see you more clearly.

5. Stretch and stay hydrated.

One of the worst mistakes that joggers can make is to run without stretching or without water. Doing so can result in very severe damage to your body. Before you run, make sure that you take your time and stretch all of your muscles. This will keep you from pulling anything while running. You also want to make sure that you are always keeping yourself hydrated. This will prevent your muscles from tightening up and will keep you from becoming dehydrated, which can result in fainting.
